Do not medicate your healthy arowana!

I am quite concern sometimes when I come across medication at aquarium shops which supposedly helps prevent diseases.  I want to advise against using these so called 'preventive' medication for your arowanas.  I have already seen several of them in the market and to a new arowana hobbyist, this must really seem like a saviour and answer to your prayers!  A one size fits all medication that will prevent anything!

WRONG!  Please don't use them unnecessarily.  Let me give a very simple analogy here.  Would you give antibiotics to anyone who is not sick?  No right? (If you said yes, then we need to talk! :-))  By giving him/her antibiotics, this will make that person immune to it in no time and in a way weakens the immune system !  You only do it when your friend is sick!  You can give your friend vitamins, etc to help build the immune system but definitely not antibiotics or anything like that.  It is the same principle here!

The best preventive medication is regular water change and an occasionally addition of salt with it.  No joke!  This is the best medicine!  I would try to stay off medication if at all possible.  Some hobbyist wait too long to take action and this causes secondary complications!  I always advise that once you start to notice signs of stress, physical anomalies (like lesions, infections, etc),etc on your arowana, you should take action immediately.  Don't wait… do some water changes to start off with.  Do not procrastinate as the longer you wait, the worst it will get.

When you are going to the aquarium shops to get medication, if possible, bring along a photo of the affected areas on your arowana as this will help in the quick diagnosis of the problem and hence the right medicine for the problem.

Cheer!

Hi

I am a new kid on the block when it comes to keeping Arowana … The first Arowana I bought 4 months ago was a RTG. Since this is an expensive fish, I thought I better try with some no so expensive one.

About a month later, I saw a Super Red Arowana from Wajok and I fell in love with it. Guess what I bought it !!!

Now, I have been frequently visiting the fish farm in pasir ris farm, rainbow in Serangoon to buy fish food, books, ketapang leaves etc … one of the thing the shop owner recommended was bio-bateria and complex vitamin for the Arowana to enhance the colour. They also recommended some dried food for arowana b'cos fresh frog, prawns and super worm may bring disease.

Do these stuff help ??? Just curious

Terence,
You need to cycle your tank well before you put your fish in. So things like bio-bacteria is good to help build up that 'good tank of water'. Vitamin is good as well . no harm using it.

Training them to eat dry food is also good not just for the reason that you stated but also for your own sanity because sometimes you are not able to buy the live food on time!
