Moving of my arowana tank.. Part 2
Hi all,
Thought I'd give you all an update. What can I say! Did 2 major exercises yesterday! Feels Great!!! What did I do you might ask?
Well I … move my arowana to the farm yesterday morning and got the movers to move my tank in the afternoon. Killed two birds with one BIG HEAVY STONE.. if you get what I mean…
MORNING …
Ok some initial tips here.. When moving your arowana, you will need a large enough bag (sturdy as well) and depending on how far you need to transport your fish, a styrofoam box is also needed. Because the farm was almost 30mins away, I needed both. I got a huge bag from the farm for this exercise. The good thing for me was this bag was pretty big and it almost filled up the entire 5 foot tank and so it did not give my arowana much space to swim around it. It was still stressed by this but I managed to get it to swim in after about 10 minutes. Actually the bag kinda 'enveloped' the poor fellow into it!
It was still trashing around but it was expected. With the help of a friend, I lifted it off the tank and put into the styrofoam box. This box will help to stabilise the bag while in the car for the short journey to the farm.
AFTERNOON …
In the afternoon, the movers came over to do the rest. This was a major effort. Just a point to note.. these guys specializes in aquariums and are not normal movers.

The movers helping me to remove the small stones from the tank. I had already drained out the water the night before.

These guys are moving my tank outside so that they can attached the black background to the bottom.

Sticking of black/dark material to the bottom of the tank as replacement for covering the bottom with stones. (to avoid droopy eyes)

Moving of arowana tank to final location.

Finally putting all the pieces back together again. The heaviest piece was the tank itself!
EVENING …
Filled up the tank with water and put in quite a bit of good bacteria so that it can grow on the bioballs and ceramic rings. Also added salt into it. Will buy some feeder fish in about 3 days time to help cycle the water for about a week or two.
That's it folks! Bulk of the work done.
Now just need to make sure that the water is cycled adequately before I bring my arowana(s) home. Still not decided whether to bring back my red one or to replace them with new younger ones.
What do you say? Any comments on this would be great. Cheers!
Before I go, thought I's share this 'siamese twins' arowana with you… Interesting fellow, don't you think?

Yeah really interesting! Is the smaller one still alive? Do you know if the fishes would survive for long?
I think bring back your Red Steve, is such a great fish! I'm pleased the move went well.
Thanks

I AM GETTING VERY USEFUL INFORMATION FROM YOU ALWAYS. I AM IN CHENNAI, INDIA. SO I AM NOT ABLE TO SEE YOUR TWINS AROWANA . COULD YOU PLEASE MAIL ME WHAT IS THE PRICE FOR RED ARWANA
THANKS
VASANTY
hi steve,at last it's done hope your aro will be return on his old home in a week or two, nice and big house you've got.thanks for sharing
Dear I agree moving fish and tank are Herculian tasks. By sheer coincidence, I see a fan of yours from Chennai(India)acknowledging your efforts. What is the size of the Arowana you shifted. How much do you think it must have weighed ?
The Siamese twin arowana in picture looks like a Malaysian Pearl Arowana, am I correct ? If it is a twin, why is one smaller than the other.
I did try taking out my Arowana for treating it with salt to get rid of the worms on its body, Poor fellow slipped from our hand and had a fall on his head. Fortunately apart from losing a scale and a small bruise nothing happened. This was quite some time back. Now he is hale and hearty.
For black base at bottom of tank. I used Black chart paper.
All the best for your articles ?
With love and warm regards.
Shefali,
The price of arowanas vary from country to country and I would not be able to tell you the price. Sorry.
Steven
Vasanty,
I would not know the price of a red arowana in India as I am based in Singapore. Sorry.
Steven
Shankar,
Sorry..
My red arowana is more than 2 feet long. As for what it weighs.. frankly I do not know.
As for the siamese twins, they are both x-backs. (or gold arowanas) I guess one has to be larger (the dominant one)than the other because if both were the same size, it would be hard for them to swim. One has to lead the other I guess. This is more so as they are attached near the pelvic fin. Hope I make sense here..

hello,Steven,
I know the feeling you had while moving your RED..I too had similar episode while moving two my arows from my 8 feet tank and making partition for another 3 in the same tank. The stress of moving them was indescribable and the fishes superb jumpy attitude during the process make me more nervous. Anyway well done there Steve, and the idea for using a black material at the bottom really help much like you said. My tank use Olympic blue instead of black. It is much easy to clean the tank this way.
By the way i hope to visit your farm one day if it is permitted. So far i have a green aro and four reds in my house. I placed my 8 feet thanks in the hall, the green arows's tank in a room and a 4 feet tank in the dinning hall… cheers
Warm regards,

Aaron,
If time permits, you are most welcome. Let me know when you are in town.
Steven
Jayanth,
Unless you are in Singapore, it would be almost impossible for me to get one to you. You should get it from one of the shops in your country.
