Arowana Care Book

Why is your Red Arowana still not red after so long???

73

Hi all,
Sorry for the long lull. Have been very busy lately with my day job!! :-) Hope everyone's in the best of health and chugging along fine! With the world economy being so 'challenged' these days and so nary of good news, I wish everyone well.

Anyway back to my topic today… I've been getting many emails asking me why their red arowana is still not red after all this while.. some after a year but some several years…!!

Let's address the easy ones first ok… If you buy a grade 1.5 or grade 2 red arowana, they WILL NEVER BE RED OK!!! Period! (They are also sometimes called amongst other names, Banjar Red) There is nothing you can do about this! :-) Don't get taken in if the seller tells you it will be red because I repeat, they will never be RED!!!

Now for a little history lesson …
If you were to buy a red arowana, there are so many names for reds that I cannot possibly name them all… Some of the original ones are like Chilli Red, Super Red, Blood Red, Purple Red, etc… (My first Arowana was a Ultra Purple Red because it was supposed to have a purple tinge when it turns..) Also let me say this, every individual farm will also name their reds after their own farms! :-) I know it's confusing but that's the fact out there unfortunately. :-)

Now for some facts. Best way is a short FAQ here..
Q1) Why is my red arowana still not red after a year?
Fact : No one will be able to tell you when your red arowana will become red! It can take 3-4 years OR never become the red that you wanted! (Unless you have really high grade ones) My first red arowana had a dull reddish body which was not really what I had in mind after 3 years! :-) I expected it to be RED RED like everyone else! I was kinda disappointed but what to do? Anyway, I took it back to the farm and exchange for 5 golden x-backs! :-) (My original red is used for breeding in one of the ponds now)

So I hope that this clears up any misconceptions about how easy (no pun intended) it is to get a red arowana red! I have only seen real red ones in our breeding pond because it is exposed to the sunlight constantly. Unfortunately you cannot do this with your tanks at home because you would have an algae bloom in your tank if it's exposed to too much sunllight!!

Q2) What can I feed my arowana to help it become redder?
Before I go into this, let me repeat myself again… if you own a grade 1.5 or 2 red arowana, please read my 2nd paragraph above again. :-)
Ok back to Q2 now… Well, anything that contains carotenoid will definitely help. Prawn shell is rich in it so shelled prawn is a good source. (Ofcourse cut out the top part of the head and tail as these can puncture the arowana's stomach)
The other way is to feed your arowana's live food like crickets and meal worms, fresh carrots before you feed them to your arowana.

I hope this has helped you understand red arowanas a bit better and not be frustrated when the color does not come out OR WHEN IT DOES COME OUT, it is not the RED that you expected. For reds, it's a patience game! Oh.. and a little prayer would not hurt either. ;-)

Oh yes, one more thing… you know those books that you buy with beautiful arowanas pictures where you would go ohhhh ahhhh .. I wish I had one of those beautiful reds!! .. errr. some of them has probably been enhanced with photoshop ok. :-) I'm not saying all of them are doctored but just take their beauty on paper with a pinch of salt! :-) We'll never know if their colors are real or not!!!

Cheerio and take care!!!

thanks for the details .i have a small suggestion to you.you are giving some useful tips about the red and some other arowana.but in India we have least number of red aro.so give some useful tips and suggestion about the silver arowana also.if you consider about this it will be very helpful for us

David Low @ 8:50 am #

dear steve: Thanks for your opinion why the red arro does not bloom red as expected of it. My super red after 3years is now only golden throughout its entire scales. There is only a slight trace of reddish colour on its gill and hope it will spread eventually. When I ask the seller why my fish takes so long being matured by now to have colours, he says its a question of luck the owner has. I felt very upset after the care and love given but have not given up hope. One day perhaps it will bloom and if not just my luck. Foodwise its better on live feed to enhance growth and colour texture but vitamin C in liquid form (a few drops) for aquariun use should be quite useful.

Hi Steve,

I bought a rtg about two years ago and somehow it turns out looking like a yellow tail arowana. I might have been conned. Anyway, i'm curious about the origin of yellow tail arowana. i know red, gold, rtg and green can be found in the wild but how about yellow tail? does it occurs naturally in the wild or is it a man made hybrid. could my arowana be a hydrid? maybe your explanation could solve my RTG or YT problem.

Regards,
Alastair

Nice Info.

Btw, since you have connections with breeders.

If the parental brooder stock is RED, can we assume the
fries should be as RED too? Guess it is how we know the farm
will great the fishes? Either in Price or In Buyback.

A Red for 5 xbacks.. is really a good deal. and Ultra Purple
Reds are suppose to be imported not Singapore bred. so the indo side should had provided some info and from the name, it should reasonable priced.

I know herein singapore, Red ponds are mixed trying to breed them. Are they new farms which would want to be in the league of Munjul red etc?

The name Super Red, Chilli Red and Blood Red has no significant meaning these days. However, if a farm puts his name on the Red.. Ie.. Farm Red.. and it turns out RED.. then its gonna be a good catch right?

ausarow @ 4:23 pm #

thanks for that steven. even though they may be known as reds it is only a small percentage that becomes a deep red. it may be veiwed as lucky but really it just comes down to which fish you get. any that are showing the hint to the breeder that they will be of that small percentage good red will likley be sold for a higher price. even then its a matter of sitting it out to see. you can only do so much to promote the red, feed and water etc but it still comes down to whether that particular individual will be red in those conditions.
if breeding a pair of very red fish you will have a higher chance of getting a red offspring than if breeding a standard "red" pair but still this is far from often being the case. its in the genes or it isnt. then its up to you to promote it. its no wonder to me that people will feed as much live stuff and red "promoting" feeds and still have fish that fall well short of their expectation. by paying the higher dollars you increase the chances of getting a red fish. still some fish will colour up a lot even when they dont show the red tinges early. in this it can be seen that some fish will be late at the colour maturing.
of course with the high cost of breeders many ponds have "red" fish that arent a deep red. a pair of deep reds does not mean all babies will look like the adults. its still and always will be natures way to have variation for survival.

habitat @ 4:32 pm #

red or not is depent on MAN BEHIND THE FISH it self…

habitat @ 4:36 pm #

fish with the pure gen soon or later it will be red.

Stephen Tang @ 5:40 pm #

Hi,Everyone,
I think the redness of an arowana is highly depended on its DNA, followed by food (as Steve has listed),light exposure and many other environmental factors. A fish's redness is determined at the moment we buy it. I therefore suggest all serious arowana lovers to buy medium size fish rather than small ones, although it is more expensive, because it is easier to predict an individual's future redness by its present coloration displayed.
Thanks.

Dear Steve,

You are a real lover of Arowanas. I personally, one should personally love the Arowana for what it is. I got a Pearl by luck, not knowing much about Arowanas. Now, it appears to be a genuine Pearl ( God's gift). It is very docile. I have put other fish alongwith it. My Arowana is about Five years old. I find it very majestic. Silver Arowana is very common in India, may be because of its cost.

Steve, thanks for your valuable tips. I just wish to know, which is the mosloving fish in Singapore next to the Arowana. Could you kindly give your contact no. and Address in Singapore?

sabri @ 3:07 pm #

Keith Pillai- South Africa @ 2:11 pm #

I have read most of the comments about Aro's. My version is as follows:
To select the perfect arowana is like looking for a needle in a haystack unless an adult is purchased but, this is expensive. My suggestion is that go out and buy small Aro's from different farms who you consider to be the top breeders. Then you play the waiting game. In time you will grow to love each one of them-watching, feeding and admiring them. The end result is that you will have the diverse set of colors that one could ever wish for and basically you would set yourself apart from other Aro keepers. To me it not about the color it is about the character of the fish. You could have the most beautiful fish but, the most problematic- eating disorder, does not take changes in temperature, water conditions etc and you will spend tons of money on this. Instead of sitting back and enjoying your fish you become stressed out wondering what will go wrong next. There is another element of keeping healthy and happy fish – stop fiddling every 5 minutes – leave the fish to settle down properly.
As far as the topic goes when is a red Arowana red – Well -I have a silver Arowana and just to own this and have his presence in my home, I consider myself to be privileged. He/she is about the happiest fish I have owned to date. His/she move throughout the tank enjoying every inch of it. The little twists and turns dives are all there to enjoy. Most of all is feeding time when this graceful fish becomes an absolute hooligan. he/she cannot just take the food gracefully. Even if he sees the food he must swim to the end of the tank and speed up, open the mouth gulp the food down, spins around splashing water, swims back to line himself up again. Live food is even better because just like how a cat plays with a mouse before eating – he does the same. I suppose to get the position for digesting. Part of being an Aro owner is the fact that you have an assortment of foods that the Aro will take – so this aspect of your fish.
The color is silver but, recently he has been getting a purple with an orange tinge to all the fins and this is quite beautiful against the silver. So I asked my pet shop guy and he said "Keith if your Silver Arowana is showing signs of other colors coming this could mean only one thing – that your fish is happy with everything around him"
Follow the basic principals on keeping Arowana's and let nature take it's course and enjoy your fish. So when is a Red Arowana Red is simply in the eye of the beholder and not the fish. As far as breeders go, for them red is red and know one will tell them otherwise.

Hi steven, i'm a student studying in Indonesia and i follow arowana keeping hobby from the first time i came here (4 years ago) until now. I got two more years here btw. Hmm, i surveyed the super red here in Jakarta, and the aros undenialbly are top quality! Some of them yeah has a dull red appearance but some has short body, spoon head, with very deep red colouration even just 20cm. For now, the cheapest i can get is 3.3million rupiah (around 1300 Malaysian Ringgit) How do you think is the price? Is it cheeper in Singapore or Malaysia? Yeah, frankly, i would love and aiming to have one and the only problem here is, if it is cheap and i were to buy it, do you know about how to transport pets @ aro from here to Malaysia or Singapore? Do i have to declare to the customs or any other legal department? Please help.

hi Steven,

It has been a really long time since I wrote to you. I have few questions for you.

I recently swop my 18 inches Panda Gold (highback) for a Majestic Red Supreme. Is this a good deal?

Internet search of the farm "PT Awarna Indah" which this fish comes from found that it does not have a web site of it own. All I found was a report of a team from Singapore visiting them.

Anyway this team report indicate all Red refers to either Chili Red or Super Red, I could not find "Majestic Red Supreme". After reading the report, I believe that mine is a Super Red as the shop that I swop my fish from has Chili Red and Majestic Red Supreme.

Therefore, if it is indeed a Super Red what grade would it be, a 1.5 or a 2?

From light reflection its scales has a blueish tint but if I photo it without flash the outcome is a red fish. How is that? Is this good? Will it turn Red?

Looking forward to your response.

Thanks

Mike

@steve, "1) Not all offsprings from two quality fish will be high quality fishes. So DNA is not everything unfortunately."

Not all offsprings get the DNA of a nice coloration from the same parent fish. duh, basic science.

DNA: it doesnt mean the DNA of the offspring are identical to each other from the same parent fish, thats not how DNA works. however, traces of the parent fish DNA can definately be found from the offspring.
Ultimately, color pigment of any fish are determined by its DNA, albino fishes are lacking of such DNA therefore resulting in little or no color pigment therefore colorless.

So simply put, DNA is the limit of how colors can go, feeding, environment etc determent how near u can get to the limit.

Hi Steven,
This is the 1st time I'm participating in this corr.I have a super cross gold which is a year old and around 15 ins length. It is very chunky in size as it eats a lot. Gold rims are also very beautiful.
However, these few weeks, I noticed some of its scales at the tips begining to chip off. Not sure why it happens? Some say it's due to the water quality and water hardness?
Really frustrated that this happens to such a nice fish.
May I know how can I treat the fish? The tank size is 6ft x 2ft x 2ft.

HI steve.

the article is very informative. I just came across a red arowana at a local fish shop with a certificate from Qain Hu corporation limited. It specifies it is a Second Generation Filial. What's your opinion about this? The has a dull red color on the tail and fins. Do you feel that it has a god potential? kindly guide me as i am willing to buy the fish. Thanks.

you really provide a hell lot of useful information here. I always have interest in this fish, it swims so elegance.

I understand this question had been asked many times before, but i would like to know if i can start a breeding farm at Sabah, Malaysia? where should i start off? how can i find those useful information for running a breeding farm? where can i find the breed needed?

i'm very interested on how you started all this….

If you wouldn't mind to share the information with me, pls feel free to e-mail me, or just reply my post here.

Thanks.
