Asian Arowanas in Australia?
G'day mate!
Been a long time since I used that phrase!
Am in sunny Gold Coast in Australia at the moment on holidays with my family.. Been a bit chilly in the evenings but still a great place to go for a family vacation.. Will be going to SeaWorld (one of the great theme parks here) with the kids tomorrow and am sure that we will have a great day..
Anyway, thought that this is as good a time to answer this question as any. There has been many queries from our friends 'down under' on whether they can import asian arowanas into Australia. The answer unfortunately is 'NO' for now as the Australian government has yet to rectify the CITES agreement. When will they do it? No one knows I guess. It won't be now for sure as the national elections I believe are just round the corner!
For your information, this is also the situation in the US as well. But there has been a petition started by a group of passionate individuals in the US to help push it along the right path. You can find the petition at US Petition but I just realized that they have stopped taking on new signatures.
From what I can gather from the readers from my site, I do hope that the Australian and US markets will open soon as there are heaps of arowana enthusiasts out there just waiting to get their hands on one..
I have written an article pertaining to this topic on the illegal trading of wild arowanas and the need to be vigilant of unscrupulous traders. You can find it on illegal trading of arowanas.
For those Australians who wants to get their hands on an arowana, you might want to consider the Australian Arowanas for now. I have written an article on them. You can catch it on Australian Arowanas.
Other than that… talk to you all soon.. Cheers and have a great day wherever you are!
